My Picks Of The $5 Threadless T-Shirts

Since we all can’t be formal and pressed all the time, I present my pick of Threadless‘ $5 t-shirt collection.  Below are my personal favorites; and I just ordered the middle two.

Good news for Canadians; you won’t be gouged that badly on shipping: for 2 shirts, the cost is $9 US (though that is the slowest option at 1-3 weeks).

Faux Fur Inside Hoods Is Just Tacky, People

Faux Fur Inside Hoods Is Just Tacky, PeopleI am really not a fan of this whole faux fur in the hood trend that never seems to die.  I remember way back in the summer of 2006; I had the displeasure of being dragged into the Abercrombie & Fitch in the US mall we were visiting; and everywhere I could see were these damn hoodies lined with fur.  Soon enough, clone-of-the-clone labels like American Eagle and company were pimping out their own designs, and the fur continued to grow in mall-goer popularity.

Here’s the problem: cheap “fur” wears terribly.  The fact that the cheap “fur” is only warn in and around the hood only exacerbates the problem; this is where it will get the most wearing and rubbing.  Cheap fake fur clumps and flattens over time, and from what I’ve seen it takes nearly no time with these kinds of items.

I implore you, spare yourselves the waste of money and embarrassment that is a fake fur lined hood! If you must have the look, spend the money and get a high quality fur replica piece or get the real thing (which there really is not substitute for).

Consider This My Official Ringing Endorsement For Joe Clothing

This weekend, I discovered the goldmine that was Joe clothing at Superstore.

Now, I was always a gigantic skeptic at the possible success and wearability of this line, but I took some time this weekend to visit my local location and was thoroughly impressed.

Not all the pieces are featured on the Joe website, but let me assure you there is more of a selection in-store. A few of the more choice items are below: the marine coat ($39), nautical wide leg pant ($29), and mini stripe polo ($12).

Most of these pieces aren’t especially fantastic on their own, but they spell magic for all layering opportunities.

For instance, one ensemble I’ threw together yesterday was: the red striped polo, grey herringbone tie (H&M) with a vintage gold crown pin (of course), a navy boxy 60s blazer (Joe), skinny black jeans, and new oxfords.

The polo wasn’t the main event, but the shirt pulled everything together!

Treat these pieces as the supporting acts of your wardrobe, and you’ll step your look up a few notches instantly and without great cost.

I would suggest checking out the stripe mod dress ($16), as well as a few of their nautical striped t-shirts ($10).

Be warned, though; not every Superstore has a wide selection of Joe. I found that the locations towards the countryside had a better selection than downtown Vancouver (go figure), so you may have to hit a few locations before you strike the mother lode!

UPDATE:

Those damn nautical pants must have been made for short folks, because I tried them without shoes on, and I was ready for the Fraser River to overflow.  Goddammit!!  Joe: get a tall section instigated, ASAP!

My Favourite Jeans Of 2008

Well, these have been my favourites since the summer of ’07 when I first purchased these, but they remain my most coveted and frequently worn pair of denim.

Made by W.I.P. and available only through Urban Outfitters in the U.K., these are my favourite for a number of reasons.

  • They fit like a dream. They have just the right amount of elasticity, without making the jeans look or feel cheap.
  • They’re affordable. At a reasonable £40 (approx. $80 CA), these are not out of the average shopper’s price range. UO also has sales online from time to time; currently the grey sibling is now on for £19.99.
  • The waist isn’t ‘Britney’ low. The zipper goes up just high enough to have a vintage feel, but not be high waisted.
  • The cut creates the perfect skinny jean. The bottom of the leg is small, yet still does not look tapered or too much like a denim legging.
  • They’re black. Enough said!
