How Not To Wear Leggings

Everyone may as well get used to it: leggings are around to stay (at least for a few more years). I thought we had all best get a refresher on what to avoid when featuring these layering pieces.

1. Do not wear leggings with thong sandals. These are the cheapest and most offensive footwear somebody could leave the house with on (besides crocs). They do not scream style maven; they broadcast laziness and fashion awkwardness, so leave those at the beach or poolside where they belong!

2. Leave neons well enough alone. Now, there is certainly nothing wrong with 80s trends. Hell, leggings’ popularity was the highest during this decade. Despite this, you should avoid doubling up on re-surfacing trends on one piece(especially ones this gruesome to the eyes!). Besides that; neon and spandex shouldn’t be worn together, ever.

3. Leggings aren’t pants! You can see Sienna Miller, below, committing one of the worst legging atrocities. Though she has a splendid figure, the last thing anyone wants is their entire thighs and bum exposed for all to see. You will look like you forgot half of your outfit, rather than fashion-forward.

4. Lacy leggings are not OK. These were some of the first styles to burst upon the scene for the legging’s resurrection, and will likely be the last to leave. These are tacky, and scream dime store quality.

5. Leggings and jean skirts are only acceptable for plastic Abercrombie & Fitch models. I can recall back in 2006, most of the population did the jean skirt and legging combination to death. This was also another favorite of the young and impressionable crowd, so I advise you all to steer clear!

This is hilarious. Although I think you might be serious which is both amazing and sad.

1. Sienna Miller wasn’t wearing leggings, they were tights. Do you even know what leggings are? HINT: They are footless tights.

2. She looked fucking awesome.

3. You suck.

Comment by lolz

@lolz: Oh, my mistake. She still looks like she was wearing her tights over granny panties, which is not so “fucking awesome”.

Well I think it is. And considering she was at the premire of a movie where she played someone who was infamous for wearing tights and a body suit it’s fairly appropriate. Props to anyone who can go out in something like that. I’ve always wanted to but haven’t had the guts to. Fashion should be interesting and pushed to the limit IMO.

And another thing, why not write an article on what you think leggings should be worn with instead of telling everyone “what not to wear.” I’m sure your generic boring hipster readers are dying to know what to pair their new AA leggings with.

Comment by lolz

@lolz: If you think only hipsters are interested in leggings (or any other trend for that matter), you are mistaken.

I’ve got to agree with Victoria, that was one outfit where I thought Sienna looked ridiculous. Any why did lolz have to throw in the “you suck” comment? If you don’t like it, don’t read it!

This is an opinion based website as far as I know. Since when is it okay to say to something ‘YOUR OPINION IS DUMB AND WRONG YOU SUCK’

constructive criticism only.

right Victoria?

Comment by erin reiger

@lolz: why not start your own blog and discuss tights and granny panties all you want there? oh thats right, because noones going to read it. potter might suck, but youre still here reading her post.

@erin: correct indeed! 🙂
@joan/ajax: hah! thanks…I think 😛

Thank you for pointing out these issues with leggings. I hope the female population of Vancouver listens! I still wear them but only very carefully…they’re definitely here to stay.

Yes, leggings are fine as pants because they are comfortable for everyone. It’s time that we ALL wear leggings. Get over the fashionista and body image constraints and just wear them. You know you want to, you know they’ll be more comfortable than the constrictive clothes you wear now. Go for it. Enjoy leggings and wear them. Choose a well made pair – not with cotton fibers that bag out over time but a high tech fiber that retains its shape. Go for the comfort and support. Leggings that go to the ankle have a greater positive visual aesthetic than capri style that chop the leg. Plus the full length leggings support you from your ankle to your waist and give you an energetic lift.

victoria, your points are completely invalid. stop being such a fashion nazi and put on some Unjeans.
seriously. these things are amazing — right, rsm?

Comment by generic elephantine woman in tights.

@RSM: Right. Forget looking good and dressing flatteringly for your body type, and let’s all wrap ourselves in spandex. Hah!
